Getting Ready to Visit Your Accountant: Tax Return Preparation Made Easy
Written by Shara Cox & Julie Jung
Tax time doesn't have to be stressful - being well-prepared can make your appointment with your accountant smoother, faster, and more valuable. Whether you’re an individual, a sole trader, or managing multiple income streams, a little organisation upfront can go a long way toward maximising your deductions and avoiding delays.
Here’s how to get ready for your tax return appointment this year:
1. Gather Your Income Information
Start by collecting all relevant income documents, such as:
Income Statements
Bank interest statements
Dividend and trust distribution statements
Rental income and expenses
Business income records (if applicable)
Government payments (e.g. Centrelink, JobSeeker)
Tip: Many of these items are now sent directly to the ATO and may already be pre-filled by late July .
2. Collect Your Deduction Records
Claiming deductions is one of the best ways to reduce your taxable income, just make sure you have documentation to support them. This may include:
Work-related expenses (e.g. professional memberships, uniforms, tools, travel)
Working from home expenses (a diary or timesheet is helpful)
Donations to registered charities
Self-education or professional development costs (if it’s directly related to your current work)
Investment expenses (e.g. management fees)
Tip: If you're unsure whether something is deductible, bring it along. We can help you determine what qualifies.
3. Review Your Private Health Insurance & Super Contributions & Income Protection
Private Health Insurance - Have your private health insurance statement on hand.
Please note that most health insurers now send this information directly to the ATO
Personal Super Contributions – Let us know if you’ve made any personal super contributions. You may be eligible for a tax deduction.
Income Protection - Provide the annual statement if you’ve paid income protection insurance premiums.
4. Bring Details of Any Major Life Changes
Significant life events can affect your tax return. Be sure to tell us if you:
Bought or sold property or shares
Changed jobs or started a business
Got married, separated or had children
Received an inheritance
Started or stopped receiving Centrelink or other government benefits
5. Think Ahead: Ask Questions & Plan for the Year Ahead
Your tax appointment is also a great opportunity to ask about:
Tax planning strategies for the coming year
Recordkeeping tips
Business structure reviews
Super contributions and retirement planning
Any ATO changes that might affect you
