Connection Before Content: The First Leadership Discipline

Written by Alan Rees

Most leaders rush into the work. It’s natural because we’re passionate, busy and driven by outcomes. The research is clear: connection must come before content if you want to unlock great performance.

When leaders skip connection, people may comply, but they don’t commit. They hear the words, but they don’t feel the message. They follow instructions, but they don’t bring creativity, ownership or advocacy.

Momentum begins in the moment people feel seen.

“Our passion often drives us to ‘get to the work.’ Our passion leads us to forget the importance of connection.” (Sean Flaherty)

Connection is a strategic advantage. It increases trust, reduces friction, accelerates alignment and unlocks the creativity required for innovation and problem‑solving.

When we feel connected:

  • people listen to understand

  • teams collaborate more easily

  • customers open up

  • conflict becomes productive

  • trust builds faster

Connection ignites the sense of belonging in our people and unlocks performance.

How to Practise “Connection Before Content” This Month

Pause and connect before every meeting, conversation or briefing.

Try one of these:

  • Ask a personal check‑in question

  • Share something personal about your own week

  • Acknowledge someone’s effort or progress

  • Invite the room to breathe and become present before launching into the agenda

  • Start with curiosity instead of instruction

It takes 60 seconds and it changes the energy.

For the next 30 days, start every meeting with connection before the agenda and observe how the quality of listening, collaboration and trust builds.
