Rise Over Run: How Leaders Accelerate Trust-building

Written by Alan Rees

Momentum isn’t magic! It is maths. In the Momentum Framework, trust grows according to a simple but powerful idea that the slope of the line matters more than the length of the line.

“Trust can only be earned when experiences occur.” Trust is the cumulative result of experiences over time.

In mathematics, the slope of a line is defined as:

The rise is the change you create through the quality, intensity and meaning of the experiences you deliver for your team, customers and suppliers. The run is simply time passing. Most organisations try to accelerate trust by stretching the run: adding more touchpoints, more communication, more noise. But time alone doesn’t create trust. Experiences do.

Leaders who focus on the numerator, the rise, condense time. They create experiences that shift relationships upward faster. This is the essence of Momentum: increasing the slope of trust so that loyalty, alignment and advocacy become natural extensions of the relationship.

The question becomes: What experiences are you deliberately creating that earn trust faster? Not generic service improvements. Not vague cultural aspirations. But specific, observable behaviours such as listening deeply, demonstrating vulnerability, following through consistently and making commitments visible. These behaviours compound, increasing the rise and steepening the slope, which builds trust faster.

When the rise increases, everything accelerates: confidence, cohesion, discretionary effort and ultimately advocacy which is the highest form of mutual investment.

Call to Action

Choose one trust‑building behaviour to amplify this month. Make it visible. Make it repeatable. Make it part of your rhythm. Momentum begins when the rise grows faster than the run.
